Is online learning suitable for me?

Yes. Our affordable multi-level courses are aimed at a wide variety of people from all walks of life. We provide courses that are suitable for students of all ages, in Britain, Europe, U.S., the Far East or indeed anywhere where there is an Internet connection. If you have access to Internet technology and a little time to spare, we will provide the rest.

Do I need any qualifications to take a course?

Many of our courses do not require any qualifications or prior knowledge. If you are unsure, visit the subject page for your chosen course where you will find full details.

Where will I study?

Online learning provides students with a unique opportunity to work with confidence in familiar, comfortable surroundings. You do not need to leave the house, travel on a crowded train or find a parking space for your car. You can access and work on your lessons at home, or if you prefer, anywhere that you have an email account.

When will I study?

Online learning is extremely flexible. It allows you to study at whatever time is most convenient to you. Unlike conventional studying at a college or evening class, our courses can be tailored to fit in with any other commitments that you may have such as work or family.

Do I need access to special equipment?

No. A home computer with Internet access and an email account is normally all that is required. It is not essential to have a printer but most people seem to find it useful. For more information, simply click on our Technical Requirements button.

Do I have to buy any books?

Although most of the course materials are provided, it is usually advisable to purchase or loan the recommended textbooks. A full list will be sent to you on enrolment.

Is online learning as interesting as being in a class?

The interactive nature of online learning sustains interest in a way that is often lacking in the conventional classroom and gives every student, even the shyest the opportunity to participate fully with the utmost confidence.

Will I miss out by not being in a classroom?

Online learning doesn't mean that you have to feel cut off from your fellow students. You can use the 'chat' facility. This enables students studying the same or similar subjects to communicate with each other and swap information and experiences. Online learning means that students work independently but are never alone.

Do you run face-to-face courses?

Yes. Some of our courses also provide the added opportunity for optional face-to-face or practical sessions where appropriate. This option will be shown in the individual course details.

Will I have a qualified tutor?

Yes. All our lecturers and trainers are qualified subject specialists with many years of teaching experience.

Will I have a personal tutor?

Yes. Each student is assigned a personal tutor. You will be provided with a unique e-mail address to facilitate communication with your tutor. S/he will guide the learner step by step through every lesson.

How will I be assessed?

At college-on-the-net all our courses are marked through a mixture of self-assessment and tutor marked assignments, submitted and returned electronically.

Where will I take the exam?

Many of our courses are accredited. You will not be permitted to take the examination online. In most cases this means that you will need to take an examination at your local examination centre. We already have a network of colleges who will be willing to allow you to take the examination on their premises. However, if you have any difficulty in finding or contacting your nearest centre, we will do our best to locate one. If you are not resident in the U.K. it may be possible to take the examination elsewhere, for example through the British Council.

Will I be able to keep up?

Online learning has many advantages. It is an extremely flexible system which facilitates learning at a student-dictated pace. Most courses run to a timetable and where there is an examination at the end of the course this cannot be altered. However, you can complete each lesson at whatever speed is suitable for you.

What if I fall behind?

It doesn't matter if you miss a class because you can access it at a later date, which makes catching up easy.

Can I defer?

Yes. The pace of study is entirely up to you. If you decide for one reason or another that you are unable to complete the course, you can put your lessons on hold and have them restarted whenever you want. Please note, however, that the examination timetables are set by the individual awarding bodies and cannot be altered. You may therefore, have to wait until the following year to enter for the exam. Our advice and guidance team will by happy to advise you should the need arise.
